Cumberland Woodland Owners Association Hat Order

 

The Cumberland Woodland Owners Association is taking hat orders for 'baseball cap' style hats with the association logo.  The bill of the cap is dark green and the rest of the cap is khaki color.  The Association initials "CWOA" are stitched on the front along with a pine tree and a deciduous tree.  The Association is asking $12.00 for each hat and would like to have their first order in by 3/1/11.  To order a hat, contact Fred Peabody by email at fredp5@earthlink.net or by phone at 717/776-3565.

Community Supported Forest Guide

A new local guide, "South Mountain Community Supported Forests," is now available. This 32-page publication has listings of forest consultants, cabinet makers, millworks, lumber suppliers, wood working companies and many other diverse economies that utilize our local forest resources.   Like small farms, small forest product operations serve a vital role in our communities. When you buy locally, your money stays within the community, bolstering the local economy.  Community Supported Forests in the South Mountain landscape is an effort to build a region-wide focus on forests and the role they play in our quality of life.

This new publication is a project of the Central Pennsylvania Conservancy in partnership with Penn State School of Forest Resources, PA DCNR Department of Forestry, Capital Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Area Council, and the South Mountain Partnership. The publication is available through the Cumberland Valley Visitors Bureau, Franklin County Visitors Bureau, Appalachian Trail Office in Boiling Springs, Pine Grove Furnace State Park, and Central PA Conservancy office as well as some of the local mills and woodworking shops. Woodlots and Wildlife

Wildlife is an integral part of any healthy forest community. Forests provide food and shelter for numerous wildlife species. In return, many of these species aid in seed dispersal, forest pest control, and many other ecological tasks that perpetuate healthy forests. On Thursday, February 10th, at the Cumberland Woodland Owners' Association meeting, Jay Livziey, Pennsylvania Forest Stewards Volunteer, will speak on wildlife management and creating animal habitat in your woodland. Jay Livziey has implemented many different wildlife habitat projects and will share his experiences at the meeting. The meeting will start at 7:00 pm at the Cumberland County Extension Office which is located at 310 Allen Road in Carlisle. You do not have to be a member and there is no cost to attend.

Stewardship involves managing your forest so that populations of native species of wildlife persist for future generations. No matter how large or small your forest is, you can make a difference. Various forest management activities may be implemented to help ensure the perpetuation of a diversity of native wildlife populations. If improving your property for wildlife is one of your management objectives, then plan to attend the February 10^th "Woodlots and Wildlife" program.

Black Bears in Pennsylvania

"Black Bears in Pennsylvania" is the topic of the Thursday, January 13^th meeting of the Cumberland Woodland Owners Association. John Fetchkan, Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officer in Cumberland County, is the featured speaker. He will present information on bear biology, habits, nuisance bears, and what you should know for your own safety around bears. The meeting will be at 7:00 PM, at the Franklin County Ag Heritage Building which is located at 185 Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg. The meeting is open to the public. You do not have to be a member of the association and there is no cost to attend. The workshop is handicap accessible. Pennsylvania's black bear population is larger and more widely distributed than in the past. According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, bears are now resident in at least 55 counties, but sightings are possible in all counties. At the same time through the continued expansion of residential development, many people have moved into the areas where bears reside. As a result, bears and people are coming into contact more than ever. Learning about bears and being aware of their habits is important for people who live in bear country, which now includes most of the state.

CUMBERLAND WOODLAND OWNERS ASSOCIATION MEETING SCHEDULE FOR 2011

 

January 13^TH – John Fetchkan from the PA. Game Commission will speak to us about Bears in Pennsylvania, where they are, nuisance bears and what you should know for your own safety around bears. The meeting will be held at the Franklin County Extension Office at 7:00 PM.

February 10^th – Jay Livziey will speak to us about Wildlife Management and creating habitat for the many animals in our forests. Jay has taken many acres of his own forest land and made it into a place for all forest animals to live and survive. The meeting will be held at the Cumberland County Extension Office at 7:00 PM.

March 10^th – Dr. James Finley will speak to us about creating Woods in your back yard. He will show us, it does not take a lot of acres to have your own woodland area. The meeting will be held at the Cumberland County Extension Office at 7:00 PM.

April 16^th – We will visit Spring Haven Nursery and visit with Annette McCoy who will talk to us about the Emerald Ash Borer and what it is doing to our forests. We will also tour the Nursery. The meeting will start at 1:00 PM.

May 12^th – Deb Bowman, Executive Director of the Central Pa. Conservancy will speak to us about the Ironmaster Restoration Project and Revision Pa. to help local Governments with planning within the Townships. The meeting will be held at the Cumberland County Extension Office at 7:00 PM.

June 11^th – We have planned a bus trip to Shavers Creek State Park for members and their families. We are planning on one bus right now and if the interest is enough we will get an additional one and open it up to the public. You must be signed up to go by the end of March. The cost Per Person will be about $25.00 which will include the round trip and a box lunch. We will have a guided tour of the Park by the Park Director Eric Burkhart. The plan is to leave at 9:00PM from the Wal-Mart parking lot in Shippensburg and return by 5:00 PM.

September 8^th -Lloyd Casey an expert on Timber Taxation from Chester County will speak to us about your responsibilies when it comes to taking and selling timber from your woodlot. The meeting will be held at the Franklin County Extension Office at 7:00 PM.

October 13^th – Tom Callahan from Adams County Nursery will be speaking to us about grafting and propagation of fruit trees. The meeting will be held at the Cumberland County Extension Office at 7:00 PM.

Ponds and Our Forests Meeting

On Thursday, October 14th, the Cumberland Woodland Owners Association is sponsoring a "Ponds and Our Forests" workshop.  Dr. Thomas McCarty, Penn State Cooperative Extension Regional Water Quality Specialist, is the featured speaker.  The meeting will be at 7:00 PM, at the Franklin County Extension Office, which is located at 181 Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg.  There is no cost to attend and you do not have to be a member of the association.

Dr. McCarty will discuss proper methods to manage ponds and lakes including water quality, aquatic plants and algae, fisheries, wildlife, and physical structures.  This presentation will focus on methods to properly manage a pond or lake and the effects this has on a forested watershed.  Topics will include assessing pond and lake structures (area, volume, water quality, dams, leaks, etc.), identifying and controlling aquatic plants and algae, stocking and managing pond fisheries, and pond wildlife issues.

Forest Stewardship Woodlot Tour

Forest Stewardship Woodlot Tour

On Saturday, September 11^th, the Cumberland Woodland Owners Association is sponsoring a Forest Stewardship Woodlot Tour to educate woodland owners about how a Forest Stewardship Plan is developed and implemented. A consulting forester and PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry staff will lead the tour through a private woodlot near Chambersburg. You do not have to be a member of the association and there is no cost to attend.

The tour will be of a privately owned 34 acre wooded property that includes a 3 acre pond and 2.5 acres of former agricultural fields. Approximately 27 acres are in mixed oak-hickory hardwoods.  Timber stand improvement harvest, farm field conversion to woodlot, wildlife habitat management, recreational trail construction, property boundary marking, control of invasive species, removal of manmade structures, road improvement, pond management and cost share programs are some of the conservation practices that you will see on the tour. 

The woodlot Tour will start on Saturday, September 11^th at 1:00 PM. To get to the woodlot from Chambersburg, take Route 30 west (Lincoln Way West) to PA Rt. 995(Warm Spring Road).  Turn left at the red light on to Rt. 995 (Warm Springs Road) and then travel 2.8 miles.  After passing mailbox # 1592, the next dirt lane on the left is the access road to woodlot.   There is a 6 ft tall blue and white real estate sign opposite access road. Look for signs.
