Wooded, brushy places are common blacklegged tick habitats. Campers, hikers, outdoor workers, and others who frequent wooded, brushy, and grassy places are commonly exposed to ticks, and this may be important in the transmission of Lyme disease in some areas. Because new homes are often built in wooded areas, transmission of Lyme disease near homes has become an important problem in some areas of the United States. The risk of exposure to ticks is greatest in the woods and garden fringe areas of properties, but ticks may also be carried by animals into lawns and gardens.

The Cumberland Woodland Owners Association is an organization of private forestland owners and others interested in forestry issues in south central Pennsylvania. Since most fruit trees do not come true from seed, vegetative propagation by either grafting or budding methods are used. Knowing which methods of propagation to use with which plant is what makes it all work. On Thursday, October 13th, Tom Callahan from Adams County Nursery will speak about grafting and propagation of fruit trees. The meeting is sponsored by the Cumberland Woodland Owners Association and will be held at 7:00 P.M. at the Cumberland County Extension Office which is located at 310 Allen Road in Carlisle. You do not have to be a member and there is no cost to attend.

Grafting and budding involve joining two genetically distinct plants so that they
unite to continue growth as a single plant. Grafting and Budding are the most important means of propagating fruit and nut trees for two reasons. First, species and cultivars that cannot be propagated by cutting or layering can be propagated by budding and grafting. Second, budding and grafting allows the use of rootstocks with desirable characteristics that make them preferable to growing a tree on its own roots. Tom Callahan has over 26 years of experience with Adams County Nursery in growing fruit trees with these methods.

The Cumberland Woodland Owners Association (CWOA) is an organization of private forestland owners and others interested in forestry issues in south central Pennsylvania. He has over 36 years of experience in forest management and taxation issues. The meeting will be at 7:00 PM, at the Franklin County Ag Heritage Building which is located at 185 Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg. The meeting is open to the public. You do not have to be a member of the association and there is no cost to attend.

An important component of managing private forestland is managing the costs, income, and taxes associated with forestland. Properly managing your property's finances and taxes can make the difference between maintaining and dividing, or losing the property, either for you or your heirs. Any time one is dealing with land or forest management expenses or income, it triggers tax consequences. Landowners are potentially liable for income, property, and estate taxes from their land and the natural resources therein. The majority of woodland owners have limited exposure to current information that addresses federal tax issues for private forest. Woodland owners need to make decisions about their passive versus active role in management, determining their basis, structuring their management plan for optimal tax advantages, allowable deductions, accounting for federal cost share payments, and more. Because woodland owners infrequently address these issues they look for professional assistance – yet commonly woodland owners struggle to find assistance.

October 13th – Tom Callahan from Adams County Nursery will be speaking to us about grafting and propagation of fruit trees. Visitors should take Exit 37 to PA 233 south then travel for eight miles. To reach the park from the south, at the intersection of Route 30 and PA 233, take PA 233 north for 13 miles. Pine Grove Furnace State Park website is: http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/pinegrovefurnace/pinegrovefurnace_mini.pdf.

The Central Pennsylvania Conservancy is restoring the Ironmaster's Mansion at Pine Grove Furnace State Park. This building, a longstanding historical structure, is an important landmark in our local history and through volunteer efforts will remain a viable community center into the future. For years it has served as a hostel and has been frequented by many Appalachian Trail hikers as a famed half-way resting area.

The Ironmaster's Mansion, registered in 1977 with the National Register of Historical Places, holds stories tracing back to 1827 when the bricks to construct the building were made on site. It is the location of not only the Pine Grove Furnace, but an Underground Railroad site, the half way point of the Appalachian Trail, and home to many famous families in Pennsylvania's history.

ReVisionPA is an education initiative of the Central Pennsylvania Conservancy that focuses on three approaches to help citizens and leaders become more experienced and informed decision-makers — visioning services, workshops, and programs. The concept behind ReVisionPA is that the more people experience the role natural resource assets play in their community, the more in-tune they will be with opportunities to protect and enhance them. Conservancy experts help communities examine how different zoning, planning, and management strategies can help to maintain the balance between natural, human, and economic resource assets.

The Cumberland Woodland Owners Association (CWOA) is an organization of private forestland owners and others interested in forestry issues in south central Pennsylvania. Cost is $350 which includes tuition, room and board. Financial aid is available. The deadline for the early acceptance period is March 31, 2011. If any vacancies remain, there will be an extended acceptance period until April 30, 2011. Applications and additional information are available on-line at: http://www.riverscamp.com/.

The Camp provides a balance of instructional material and hands-on learning. Classes include principles of ecology, hydrogeology, wetlands, trout stream entomology, aquatic invertebrates, hydrology, watersheds, the biology of pollution, trout behavior, reptiles and amphibians, acid deposition, the politics of conservation, and the effects of humans on the Chesapeake Bay. Even though this is the learning experience of a lifetime, it is not all work. Instructors lead streamside programs to collect aquatic invertebrates, review angling history and the evolution of an angler, conduct field identification of riparian corridors, and demonstrate wader safety and survival. Sessions include beginner and advanced casting, knot tying, fly tying, and advanced fishing.

Camp faculty are leaders in their respective fields. Owners of even the smallest landscapes can make a positive difference in their environment through planning and implementing simple stewardship practices. The meeting will be held at 7:00 P.M. at the Cumberland County Extension Office which is located at 310 Allen Road in Carlisle. You do not have to be a member and there is no cost to attend.

The vast majority of Pennsylvania's landowners have less than 10 acres. This land has many important resources such as soil, water, trees, wildlife and plants. Many benefits can be gained from any one of these resources. Adding new trees and shrubs, managing insects and diseases, harvesting products and controlling invasive species can help create and preserve a beneficial natural area. Creating and caring for your backyard woodlot may not take as much time or money as one might expect.

The Cumberland Woodland Owners Association is an organization of forestland owners and others interested in forestry issues in south central Pennsylvania. Forests provide food and shelter for numerous wildlife species. In return, many of these species aid in seed dispersal, forest pest control, and many other ecological tasks that perpetuate healthy forests. On Thursday, February 10th, at the Cumberland Woodland Owners' Association meeting, Jay Livziey, Pennsylvania Forest Stewards Volunteer, will speak on wildlife management and creating animal habitat in your woodland. Jay Livziey has implemented many different wildlife habitat projects and will share his experiences at the meeting. The meeting will start at 7:00 pm at the Cumberland County Extension Office which is located at 310 Allen Road in Carlisle. You do not have to be a member and there is no cost to attend.

Stewardship involves managing your forest so that populations of native species of wildlife persist for future generations. No matter how large or small your forest is, you can make a difference. Various forest management activities may be implemented to help ensure the perpetuation of a diversity of native wildlife populations. If improving your property for wildlife is one of your management objectives, then plan to attend the February 10th "Woodlots and Wildlife" program.

The Cumberland Woodland Owners Association (CWOA) is an organization of private forestland owners and others interested in forestry issues in south central Pennsylvania. According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, bears are now resident in at least 55 counties, but sightings are possible in all counties. At the same time through the continued expansion of residential development, many people have moved into the areas where bears reside. As a result, bears and people are coming into contact more than ever. Learning about bears and being aware of their habits is important for people who live in bear country, which now includes most of the state.

The Cumberland Woodland Owners Association is an organization of private forestland owners and others interested in forestry issues in south central Pennsylvania. A consulting forester and PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry staff will lead the tour through a private woodlot near Chambersburg. You do not have to be a member of the association and there is no cost to attend.

The tour will be of a privately owned 34 acre wooded property that includes a 3 acre pond and 2.5 acres of former agricultural fields. Approximately 27 acres are in mixed oak-hickory hardwoods. Timber stand improvement harvest, farm field conversion to woodlot, wildlife habitat management, recreational trail construction, property boundary marking, control of invasive species, removal of manmade structures, road improvement, pond management and cost share programs are some of the conservation practices that you will see on the tour.

The woodlot Tour will start on Saturday, September 11th at 1:00 PM. To get to the woodlot from Chambersburg, take Route 30 west (Lincoln Way West) to PA Rt. 995(Warm Spring Road). Turn left at the red light on to Rt. 995 (Warm Springs Road) and then travel 2.8 miles. After passing mailbox # 1592, the next dirt lane on the left is the access road to woodlot. There is a 6 ft tall blue and white real estate sign opposite access road. Look for signs. Wear appropriate clothing for outdoors including hiking boots. Bring raingear in case weather is marginal. For more information about the tour, contact Penn State Cooperative Extension at 263-9226. If severe weather is threatening on the day of the event, call 717/262-0083 for information.

The Cumberland Woodland Owners Association is an organization of forestland owners and others interested in forestry issues in south central Pennsylvania. Redding said today.

Emerald Ash Borer poses a serious threat to Pennsylvania's nation-leading hardwoods industry, which contributes nearly $25 billion to the economy, Redding said.

In Centre County, the beetle was found in Potters Mills at the intersection of routes 144 and 322. The Fulton County infestation is in Valley-Hi Borough along Route 30, and the Somerset County location is in Quemahoning Township on Route 30. A suspect sample found in Gregg Township, Union County, is being tested for confirmation.

"The Agriculture department's summer survey crews are diligently working to assess the spread of the beetle across the state," said Redding. "With the holiday weekend at hand, we urge all campers and travelers to help prevent the further spread of these pests by not hauling firewood from place to place."

State and federal Emerald Ash Borer quarantines restrict moving ash nursery stock, green lumber, and any other ash material, including logs, stumps, roots and branches, from the quarantine area. However, due to the difficulty in distinguishing between species of hardwood firewood, all hardwood firewood and wood chips—including ash, oak, maple and hickory—are considered quarantined.

The department has not yet expanded the existing quarantine, but will draw new quarantine lines based on the survey results through the end of July.

The invasive Emerald Ash Borer beetle was first detected in Pennsylvania in the summer of 2007 in Butler County, and subsequently was found in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Indiana, Juniata, Lawrence, Mercer, Mifflin, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

The wood-boring beetle is native to China and eastern Asia. The pest likely arrived in North America in wooden shipping crates. It was first detected in July 2002 in southeastern Michigan and neighboring Windsor, Ontario, Canada. In addition to Pennsylvania, the beetle is attacking ash trees in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Typically, the Emerald Ash Borer beetles will kill an ash tree within three years of the initial infestation. Adults are dark green, one-half inch in length and one-eighth inch wide, and fly only from early May until September. Larvae spend the rest of the year beneath the bark of ash trees. When they emerge as adults, they leave D-shaped holes in the bark about one-eighth inch wide.

People who suspect they have found Emerald Ash Borer beetles should call the department's toll-free pest hotline at 1-866-253-7189 1-866-253-7189 . The traps are designed to attract flying adult beetles to help detect further spread. Crews will continue to monitor the traps all summer and remove them by the end of August.

The national survey is being conducted in cooperation with U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the United States Forest Service and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry.

Information is also available at www.agriculture.state.pa.us by searching "Emerald Ash Borer."

Media contact: Jean Kummer, 717-787-5085 717-787-5085

June 10 Sawmill Tour

JUNE 10TH – 6:30 PM, MARTIN LEHMAN'S SAWMILL OPERATION IN CARLISLE.

The sawmill operation tour will highlight what is required to processes raw timber into dimensional lumber for shipping and eventual sale. Deer provide the greatest wildlife value to the citizens of this state as watchable wildlife, a huntable resource, and venison for countless families. Much of Pennsylvania's rural, cultural heritage is closely linked to this species. Management of white-tailed deer on the State Forest lands has a profound impact on many aspects of the stewardship of these lands.

The large number of deer in the state has significantly changed our forests over the last 50 years, particularly in our most heavily forested areas. In some forests, the diversity of plant species that grew there for centuries has been replaced by a few species that deer do not prefer to eat. Deer overbrowsing has been identified as the primary factor in the failure of many of these areas to regenerate many forest plant species, both woody and herbaceous. To ensure the health of deer and our forests, herds must be kept in balance with their habitat.

According to the PA DCNR publication, "Healthy Forests- Healthy Deer" (http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/publications/Health_Forests_Deer.pdf), the health of both deer and the forests is closely tied together. Deer feed primarily on "browse," the tender shoots and buds of young trees and plants. They also depend on a lush forest understory to hide from predators and protect their young. When deer are out of balance with their habitat, they can very quickly degrade the forest environment for themselves and other plants and animals. However, with the right balance, both the deer and the forest thrive.

According to PA DCNR, many factors influence the health of the forest, including invasive insect and plant species, acid precipitation, changing weather patterns, soil quality and competing vegetation. The complex interaction among these factors, in addition to the local deer populations, greatly influences the forest's capacity to renew itself and respond to more balanced deer populations. Both research and operational experience, however, continue to demonstrate that deer are a large part of the equation, and that balancing deer populations is key to establishing a healthy, biologically diverse forest.

On Thursday, April 22nd, Rick Watts with the Quality Deer Management Association will speak about deer management and what this means to our forests at Penn State Mont Alto. The meeting will be held at 7:00 P.M. at Penn State Mont Alto in the auditorium of the General Studies Building. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, there are over 2,100 native plant species known in Pennsylvania. Native plants are those which occurred within the state before settlement by Europeans. These include ferns, grasses, flowering perennials, annuals, woody trees, shrubs, and vines which covered "Penns's Woods" when the first settlers arrived.

An invasive plant is a species that has become a weed pest. One that grows aggressively, spreads, and displaces other plants. Although some native plants are aggressive on disturbed areas, most invasive plants are introduced from other continents, leaving behind pests, diseases, predators, and other natural controls.

According to the PA DCNR, habitat destruction, invasive plants, and introduced pests and diseases have resulted in the elimination of 5 percent of Pennsylvania native plant species and another 25 percent are in danger of becoming so. Action can be taken to protect and enhance the remaining diversity of beautiful and often useful native plant species.

On Thursday, April 8th, at 6:30 pm, the Cumberland Woodland Owners' Association is sponsoring a "Native Plants" tour at Spring Haven Nurseries which is located at 1362 Mountain Road in Newburg. Spring Haven Nurseries (http://springhavennatives.com/) specializes in native woodland plants and shade perennials grown either in propagation beds or in the gardens located there. Nursery owners, Dave and Dianne Cornman, will lead the tour and explain how to protect native plant communities and how to practice responsible landscaping. The meeting will start at 7:00 pm at the Franklin County Extension Office which is located at 181 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg. The event is open to the general public and there is no cost to attend.

In Pennsylvania, forest regeneration, or regrowth, requires sufficient numbers of desirable tree seedlings to be available to replace today's forest following harvest. Under many circumstances, regeneration is not easy. Competing plants, deer, and insufficient light on the forest floor can interfere with regeneration and, in the long run, may threaten forest sustainability. Recent U.S. Forest Service data from Pennsylvania's statewide forest inventory (2004) document regeneration problems.

In forest stands where light conditions are adequate for regeneration development, less than 50 percent have adequate seedlings and saplings to regenerate the forest. This finding includes all tree species capable of growing into the forest canopy. When only commercially desirable species are considered, less than one-third of these forest stands have adequate regeneration to replace the existing forest. Sustainable forestry is defined as managing our forest resources to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

The Cumberland Woodland Owners Association (CWOA) is an organization of forestland owners and others interested in forestry issues in south central Pennsylvania.
